TO THE INTERPRETATION OF ONE PLOT OF A LATE
HITTITE TIME KARKHEMISH MONUMENT
On the Karkhemish orthostat seems to be described the ceremony of
proclaiming (by Iariris) Kamanas his son and heir.
The scene of "playing dice", "a lucky draw", featured in the lower registre
of the middle part of the orthostat in my opinion exceeds the format of a
mere game. It looks more like the draw of pretenders for kingship.
The principal idea of the scene is to reveal the fact, that the "lucky" winner
among the members of the royal family is Kamanas. He is already chosen
by his regent. As for the other members of the royal family – the brothers
of Kamanas – they will get their due, according to their turn or hierarchy,
in the temples, which they receive through the draw.
