FortisBC Inc. (FortisBC or the Company)
Application for a Certificate of Public Convenience and Necessity
for the Advanced Metering Infrastructure Project
Response to British Columbia Utilities Commission (BCUC or the Commission)
Information Request (IR) No. 1
Submission Date:
October 5, 2012
Page 288
FortisBC understands that many of the BCMEU members have already invested in wireless
drive-by metering systems (Nelson, Grand Forks and Penticton). This is a significant
investment that would be stranded if these municipal utilities decided to share the proposed
FortisBC infrastructure.
Please also see the response to BCUC IR Q118.1
Response:
118.2 Please clarify the AMI situation with FortisBC considering a future purchase of
the City of Kelowna utility.
The proposed City of Kelowna utility purchase is still in the initial stages and is yet to be
approved by the Kelowna electorate, Kelowna city council, and the BCUC. As the proposed
acquisition progresses the Company will consider how best to address the impact to the AMI
Project which may include an update to the AMI application currently under review.
Response:
118.3 What would be the cost and benefit impacts if the wholesale customers were to
become part of the AMI system at a later date?
FortisBC has not yet completed its analysis of cost and benefit impacts to the AMI project if the
City of Kelowna customers were to become part of the proposed AMI system. Please also see
the response to BCUC IR1 Q118.2.
