The inferences which we derive from the statements of Josephus,^ though always to be qualified by our general estimate of his animys,* accord with those from the New Testament. In regard to Rabbinic writings we have to bear in mind the admittedly unhistorical character of most of their notices, the strong party-bias which coloured ahnost all their statements regarding opponents, and their constant tendency to trace later views and practices to earlier times.
