<strong>the</strong> money-changers, <strong>and</strong> who were <strong>the</strong> real<br />

owners <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Temple-market ?<br />

To <strong>the</strong> first <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se questions <strong>the</strong> Jerusalem<br />

Talmud • gives no • jer. sbcq. less than five<br />

different answers, showing that <strong>the</strong>re was no fixed<br />

rule i!iiesrp!46i as to <strong>the</strong> employment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>its, or, at least, that it was no longer known at<br />

that time. Although four <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se answers point to<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir use for <strong>the</strong> public service, yet that which<br />

seems most likely assigns <strong>the</strong> whole pr<strong>of</strong>its to <strong>the</strong><br />

money-changers' <strong>the</strong>mselves. But in that case it can<br />

scarcely be doubted, that <strong>the</strong>y had to pay a<br />

considerable rental or percentage to <strong>the</strong> leading<br />

Temple-<strong>of</strong>ficiaJs. <strong>The</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>its from <strong>the</strong> sale <strong>of</strong><br />

meat- <strong>and</strong> drink-<strong>of</strong>ferings went to <strong>the</strong> Templetreasury.<br />

But it can hardly be believed, that such<br />

was <strong>the</strong> case in regard to <strong>the</strong> Temple-market. On<br />

<strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r h<strong>and</strong>, <strong>the</strong>re can be little doubt, that this<br />

market was what in Rabbinic writings is styled ^<br />

<strong>the</strong> Bazaars <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sons <strong>of</strong> Annas' (Glianuyoth<br />

heney Chanan)^ <strong>the</strong> sons <strong>of</strong> that High-Priest Annas,<br />

who is so infamous in New Testament history.
