houses unclean, as containing idols or things<br />

dedicated to <strong>the</strong>m; <strong>the</strong>ir feasts, <strong>the</strong>ir joyous<br />

occasions, <strong>the</strong>ir very contact, was polluted by<br />

idolatry; <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>re was no security, if a hea<strong>the</strong>n<br />

were left alone in a room, that he might not, in<br />

wantonness or by carelessness, defile <strong>the</strong> wine or<br />

meat on <strong>the</strong> table, or <strong>the</strong> oil <strong>and</strong> wheat in <strong>the</strong> store.<br />

Under such circumstances, <strong>the</strong>refore, everything<br />

must be regarded as having been rendered unclean.<br />

Three days before a hea<strong>the</strong>n festival (according to<br />

some, also three days after) every business<br />

transaction with <strong>the</strong>m was prohibited, for fear <strong>of</strong><br />

giving ei<strong>the</strong>r help or pleasure. Jews were to avoid<br />

passing through a city where <strong>the</strong>re was an<br />

idolatrous feast—nay, <strong>the</strong>y were not even to sit<br />

down within <strong>the</strong> shadow <strong>of</strong> a tree dedicated to
