<strong>of</strong> mourning. But even so He would tell it <strong>the</strong>m, as<br />

so <strong>of</strong>ten in like circumstanceB He tells it to us, that<br />

<strong>the</strong> damsel was not dead, but only sleeping. <strong>The</strong><br />

Babbis also frequently have <strong>the</strong> expression * to<br />

sleep' (demakh -pt, or -po^, when <strong>the</strong> sleep is<br />

overpowering <strong>and</strong> oppressive), instead <strong>of</strong> * to<br />

die.* It may well have been that <strong>Jesus</strong> made use <strong>of</strong><br />

this word <strong>of</strong> double meaning in some such manner<br />

as this: TaJyetha dimkhathj ^ <strong>the</strong> maiden sleepeth.'<br />

And <strong>the</strong>y understood Him well in <strong>the</strong>ir own way,<br />

yet understood Him not at all.<br />

As so many <strong>of</strong> those who now hear this word, <strong>the</strong>y<br />

to whom it was <strong>the</strong>n spoken, in <strong>the</strong>ir coarse<br />

realism, laughed Him to scorn. For did <strong>the</strong>y not<br />

verily know that she had actually died, even before<br />

<strong>the</strong> messengers had been despatched to prevent <strong>the</strong><br />

needless tiouUe <strong>of</strong> His coming ? Yet even this<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir scorn served a higher purpose. For it showed<br />

<strong>the</strong>se two things: that to <strong>the</strong> certain belief <strong>of</strong> ^ose<br />

in <strong>the</strong> house <strong>the</strong> maiden was really dead, <strong>and</strong> that
