weary captivity passed. Uncertain what to expect,<br />

<strong>the</strong>y seem to have oscillated between MaobsBrus<br />

<strong>and</strong> Capernaum. Any hope <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir Master's<br />

vindication <strong>and</strong> deliver^ ance lay in <strong>the</strong><br />

possibilities involved in <strong>the</strong> announcement he had<br />

nmde <strong>of</strong> <strong>Jesus</strong> as <strong>the</strong> Christ. And it was to Him that<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir Master's finger had pointed <strong>the</strong>m. Indeed,<br />

some <strong>of</strong> <strong>Jesus</strong>' earliest <strong>and</strong> most intimate disciples<br />

had come from <strong>the</strong>ir ranks; <strong>and</strong>, as <strong>the</strong>mselves had<br />

remarked, <strong>the</strong> multitude had turned to <strong>Jesus</strong> even<br />

before <strong>the</strong> Baptist's imprisonment.* And yet, could<br />

He be <strong>the</strong> Christ ? How • bl JobD many things<br />

about Him that were strange <strong>and</strong> seemed<br />

a terrible contrast between him who lay in <strong>the</strong><br />

dungeon <strong>of</strong> MachsBrus, <strong>and</strong> Him Who sat down to<br />

eat <strong>and</strong> dxink at a feast <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> publicans.<br />

Wi« reception <strong>of</strong> publicans <strong>and</strong> sinners <strong>the</strong>y could<br />

underst<strong>and</strong>; <strong>the</strong>ir own Master had not rejected<br />

<strong>the</strong>m. But why eat <strong>and</strong> drink
