views, we turn to a brief analysis <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se views.*<br />

1. <strong>The</strong>ology, —In reference to God, we find, side<br />

by side, <strong>the</strong> apparently contradictory views <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Platonic <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Stoic schools. Following <strong>the</strong><br />

former, <strong>the</strong> sharpest distinction was drawn<br />

between God <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> world. God existed nei<strong>the</strong>r in<br />

space, nor in time ; He had nei<strong>the</strong>r human qualities<br />

nor affections; in fact, He was without<br />

' Thus, to give only a few oat <strong>of</strong> many examples,<br />

Bath is derived from ravahy to satiate, to give to<br />

drink, hecaose David, her desoerudant, satiated<br />

SHaMOTH, being altered to SHeM oth, ' names.'<br />

8 a, is full <strong>of</strong> Haggadic Scripture inlerpretatioos.<br />
