devotions might preface <strong>the</strong> regular service by free<br />

prayer, or insert such between certain parts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

liturgy.<br />

We are now in <strong>the</strong> Nazareth Synagogue. <strong>The</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong>ficials are aJ assembled. <strong>The</strong> lowest <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se is<br />

<strong>the</strong> ChazzaUy or minister,* who <strong>of</strong>ten acts also as<br />

schoolmaster. For this reason, <strong>and</strong> because <strong>the</strong><br />

conduct <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> services may frequently devolve<br />

upon him, great care is taken in his selection. He<br />

must be not only irreproachable, but, if possible,<br />

his family also. Humility, modesty, knowledge <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Scriptures, distinctness <strong>and</strong> correctness in<br />

pronunciation, simpliciiy <strong>and</strong> neatness in dress,<br />

<strong>and</strong> an absence <strong>of</strong> self-assertion, are qualities<br />

sought for, <strong>and</strong> which, in some measure, remind us<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> higher qualifications insisted on by St. Paul<br />

in <strong>the</strong> choice <strong>of</strong> ecclesiastical <strong>of</strong>ficers. <strong>The</strong>n <strong>the</strong>re<br />

are <strong>the</strong> elders (Zeqenim)y or rulers (SfXP^^^^y<br />

whose chief is <strong>the</strong> Archisynagogck or Rosh hor-
