in Sebaste or Shechem, but at Sychar,* which in<br />

<strong>the</strong> fourth century at least had so entirely ceased to<br />

be Samaritan, that it had become <strong>the</strong> home <strong>of</strong> some<br />

celebrated Babbis;' <strong>the</strong> intimate knowledge <strong>of</strong><br />

Samaritan <strong>and</strong> Jewish relations, which at <strong>the</strong> time
