Antipas, we kuow <strong>the</strong> second name (Antipas). But,<br />

as for example in <strong>the</strong> case <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Bonaparte f<br />

umlly, it is most unlikely that <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r two should<br />

have borne <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> Herod without any<br />

distinctiTe second name. Hence we conclikle, that<br />

<strong>the</strong> name Philip, which occurs in <strong>the</strong> Gospels (in<br />

St. Luke iii. 19 it is spurious), was <strong>the</strong> second<br />

name <strong>of</strong> him whom Jatephui simply names as<br />

Herod. If it be objected, that in such case Herod<br />

would have had two loiis<br />

VOL. L<br />

named Philip, we answer (1) that he had two sons<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> name Antipas, or Anti-pater, (2) that <strong>the</strong>y<br />

were <strong>the</strong> sons <strong>of</strong> different mo<strong>the</strong>rs, <strong>and</strong> (8) that <strong>the</strong><br />

full name <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> one was Herod Philip (first<br />

husb<strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> Herodias), <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r simply<br />

Philip <strong>the</strong> Tetrarch (husb<strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> Salome, <strong>and</strong> sonin-law<br />

<strong>of</strong> Herodias <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> Herod Philip her first<br />

husb<strong>and</strong>). Thus for distinction's sake <strong>the</strong> one might<br />

have been generally called simply H«rod, <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

Philip.
