be Thou, O Lord! Who ga<strong>the</strong>rest <strong>the</strong> outcasts <strong>of</strong><br />

Thy people Israel.'' That prayer included in its<br />

generality also ^H^zLii <strong>the</strong> lost ten tribes. So, for<br />

example, <strong>the</strong> prophecy'* was rendered:<br />

* <strong>The</strong>y hasten hi<strong>the</strong>r, like a bird out <strong>of</strong> Egypt,'—<br />

referring to Israel <strong>of</strong> old; ^ <strong>and</strong> like a dove out <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> l<strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> Assyria'—referring to <strong>the</strong> ten tribes.®'<br />

And thus even <strong>the</strong>se w<strong>and</strong>erers, so long lost, were<br />

to be reckoned in <strong>the</strong> fold <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Good Shepherd.^<br />

It is worth while to trace, how universally <strong>and</strong><br />

warmly both Eastern <strong>and</strong> Western Judaism<br />

cherished this hope <strong>of</strong> all Israel's return to <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

own l<strong>and</strong>. <strong>The</strong> Targumim bear repeated reference<br />

to it;^ <strong>and</strong> although <strong>the</strong>re may be question as to <strong>the</strong><br />

exact date <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se paraphrases, it cannot be<br />

doubted, that in this respect <strong>the</strong>y represented <strong>the</strong><br />

views <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Synagogue at <strong>the</strong> time <strong>of</strong> Jesos. For<br />

<strong>the</strong> same reason we may ga<strong>the</strong>r from <strong>the</strong> Talmud<br />
