were marked divergences from <strong>the</strong> observances in<br />

that stronghold <strong>of</strong> Rabbinism,^ Judasa—indicating<br />

greater simplicity <strong>and</strong> fireedom from <strong>the</strong> constant<br />

intrusion <strong>of</strong> traditional ordinances. <strong>The</strong> home-life<br />

would be all <strong>the</strong> purer, that <strong>the</strong> veil <strong>of</strong> wedded life<br />

was not BO coarsely lifted as in Judsea, nor its<br />

sacred secrecy interfered with by an Argus-eyed<br />

legislation,* <strong>The</strong> purity <strong>of</strong> betrothal in Galilee was<br />

• KctiLisa less likely to be sullied,* <strong>and</strong> weddings<br />

were more simple than in ► KetiuWa, Judssa—<br />

^without <strong>the</strong> dubious institution <strong>of</strong> groomsmen,'**<br />

not unfrequently have degenerated into utter<br />

coarseness. <strong>The</strong> bride was chosen, not as in<br />

JudsBa, where money was too <strong>of</strong>ten <strong>the</strong> motive,<br />

but as in Jerusalem, with chief regard to * a fair<br />

degree;' <strong>and</strong> widows were (as in Jerusalem) more<br />

tenderly cared for, as we ga<strong>the</strong>r even from <strong>the</strong> fact,<br />

that <strong>the</strong>y had a life-right <strong>of</strong> residence in <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

husb<strong>and</strong>'s house.**
