whom he had chosen for wife, only a direct Divine<br />

communication could have chased all questioning<br />

from his heart, <strong>and</strong> given him that assurance, which<br />

was needful in <strong>the</strong> fdture history <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Messiah</strong>.<br />

Brief as, with exquisite delicacy, <strong>the</strong> narrative is,<br />

we can read in <strong>the</strong> ' thoughts' <strong>of</strong> Joseph <strong>the</strong> anxious<br />

contending <strong>of</strong> feelings, <strong>the</strong> scarcely established,<br />

<strong>and</strong> yet delayed, resolve to *put her away,' which<br />

could only be done by r^ular divorce; this one<br />

determination only st<strong>and</strong>ing out clearly, that, if it<br />

must be, her letter <strong>of</strong> divorce shall be h<strong>and</strong>ed to<br />

her privately, only in <strong>the</strong> presence <strong>of</strong> two<br />

witnesses. <strong>The</strong> humble Tsaddiq <strong>of</strong> Nazareth would<br />

not willingly have brought <strong>the</strong> blush to any fac0,<br />

least <strong>of</strong> all would he make <strong>of</strong> her * a public<br />

exhibition <strong>of</strong> shame.'' It was a relief, that he could<br />

legally divorce her ei<strong>the</strong>r publicly or privately,<br />

whe<strong>the</strong>r from change <strong>of</strong> feeling, or because he had<br />

found just cause for it, but hesitated to make it<br />

known, ei<strong>the</strong>r from regard for his own character,<br />

or because he had not sufficient I^al evidence * <strong>of</strong>
