except as p&r contra. Thus, on St. Matt. xiii. 17 it<br />

is to be remarked, that in Babbinic opinion<br />

revelation <strong>of</strong> Qod*s mysteries woald only be<br />

granted to whose who were righteous or learned.<br />

<strong>The</strong> Midr. on EccL i. 7 contains <strong>the</strong> following<br />

Parable in illastration (comp. Dan. ii. 21): A<br />

matron is asked, to which <strong>of</strong> two that would<br />

borrow she would lend money—to a rich or a poor<br />

man. And when she answers: To a rich man, since<br />

even if he lost it, he would be able to repay, she is<br />

told that similarly God gives not wisdom to fools,<br />

who would employ it for <strong>the</strong>atres <strong>and</strong> baths, &c.,<br />

but to <strong>the</strong> sages, who make use <strong>of</strong> it in <strong>the</strong><br />

Academies. A similar <strong>and</strong> even more strange<br />

explanation <strong>of</strong> Exod. xv. 26 occurs Ber. 40 a,<br />

where it is shown that God supports <strong>the</strong> full, <strong>and</strong>
