lustrations. <strong>The</strong>se, as we know from classical<br />

writers, were well known to <strong>the</strong> hea<strong>the</strong>n, <strong>and</strong> even<br />

frequented by <strong>the</strong>m. <strong>The</strong>ir Sabbath observance,<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir fasting on Thursdays, <strong>the</strong>ir Day <strong>of</strong> Atonement,<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir laws relating to food, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir pilgrimages to<br />

Jerusalem—all found sympathisers among Judaising<br />

Gentiles." <strong>The</strong>y even watched to see, how <strong>the</strong><br />

Sabbatii lamp was kindled, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> solemn prayers<br />

spoken which marked <strong>the</strong> beginning <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
