Lord referred. <strong>The</strong> Enemy was <strong>the</strong> Devil; <strong>the</strong> field,<br />

<strong>the</strong> world; <strong>the</strong> good seed, <strong>the</strong> children <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Elingdom ; <strong>the</strong> tares, <strong>the</strong> children <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Wicked<br />

One. And most markedly did <strong>the</strong> Lord, in this<br />

instance, not explain <strong>the</strong> Parable, as <strong>the</strong> first one,<br />

in its details, bnt only indicate, so to speak, <strong>the</strong><br />

steppingHBtones for its underst<strong>and</strong>ing. This, not<br />

only to train <strong>the</strong> disciples, but because—unlike <strong>the</strong><br />

first Parable—^that <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Tares would only in <strong>the</strong><br />

future <strong>and</strong> increasingly unfold its meaning.<br />

But even this was not all. <strong>The</strong> disciples had now<br />

knowledge concerning <strong>the</strong> mysteries <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Kingdom. But that Kingdom was not matter <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

underst<strong>and</strong>ing only, but <strong>of</strong> personal apprehension.<br />

This implied discovery <strong>of</strong> its value, personal<br />

acquisition <strong>of</strong> it, <strong>and</strong> surrender <strong>of</strong> all to its<br />

possession. And this mystery <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Kingdom was<br />

next conveyed to <strong>the</strong> disciples in those Parables<br />

specially addressed to, <strong>and</strong> suited only for, <strong>the</strong>m.<br />

Kindred, or ra<strong>the</strong>r closely connected, as are <strong>the</strong><br />

two Parables <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Treasure hid in <strong>the</strong> Field <strong>and</strong>
