indicate, that <strong>the</strong> only object which <strong>the</strong> servants<br />

had in view was to keep <strong>the</strong> wheat pure <strong>and</strong><br />

unmixed for <strong>the</strong> harvest. But this <strong>the</strong>ir final object<br />

would have been frustrated by <strong>the</strong> procedure,<br />

which <strong>the</strong>ir inconsiderate zeal suggested. It would,<br />

indeed, have been quite possible to distinguish <strong>the</strong><br />

tares from <strong>the</strong> wheat—<strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Parable proceeds on<br />

this very assumption—for, by <strong>the</strong>ir fruit <strong>the</strong>y<br />

would be known. But in <strong>the</strong> present instance<br />

separation would have been impossible, without,<br />

at <strong>the</strong> same time, uprooting some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> wheat. For,<br />

<strong>the</strong> tares had been sown right into <strong>the</strong> midst, <strong>and</strong><br />

not merely by <strong>the</strong> side, <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> wheat; <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir roots<br />

<strong>and</strong> blades must have become intertwined. And so<br />

<strong>the</strong>y must grow toge<strong>the</strong>r to <strong>the</strong> harvest. <strong>The</strong>n such<br />

danger would no longer exist, for <strong>the</strong> period <strong>of</strong><br />

growing was past, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> wheat had to be<br />

ga<strong>the</strong>red into <strong>the</strong> bam. <strong>The</strong>n would be <strong>the</strong> right<br />

time to bid <strong>the</strong> reapers first ga<strong>the</strong>r <strong>the</strong> tares into<br />

bundles for burning, that afterwards <strong>the</strong> wheat,<br />

pure <strong>and</strong> unmixed, might be stored in <strong>the</strong> gamer.<br />

True to life as <strong>the</strong> picture is, yet <strong>the</strong> Parable was,
