Sadduoees represented <strong>the</strong> civil <strong>and</strong> political<br />

element. <strong>The</strong> Pharisees represented only <strong>the</strong><br />

prevailing system <strong>of</strong>, not traditionalism itself;<br />

while <strong>the</strong> Sadduoees also numbered among <strong>the</strong>m<br />

many learned men. <strong>The</strong>y were able to enter into<br />

controversy, <strong>of</strong>ten protracted <strong>and</strong> fierce, with <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

opponente, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>y acted as members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Sanhedrin, although <strong>the</strong>y had diverging .traditions<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir own, <strong>and</strong> even, as it would appear, at one<br />

time a complete code <strong>of</strong> canon-law.*^ Moreover,<br />

<strong>the</strong> admitted xJHISfp^c. fact, that when in <strong>of</strong>fice<br />

<strong>the</strong> Sadduoees conformed to <strong>the</strong> principles ^V^p,i<br />

<strong>and</strong> practices <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Pharisees, proves at least that<br />

<strong>the</strong>y must have * been acquainted with <strong>the</strong><br />

ordinances <strong>of</strong> traditionalism.* Lastly, <strong>the</strong>re were<br />

certain traditional ordinances on which both<br />

parties were at one.^ Thus it seems Sudduceeism<br />

was in a sense ra<strong>the</strong>r a specula- 3^*"^^' tive than a<br />

practical system, starting from simple <strong>and</strong> welldefined<br />

principles, but wide-reaching in its<br />

possible consequences. Perhaps it may best be<br />

described as a general re€K)tion against <strong>the</strong><br />

extremes <strong>of</strong> Pharisaism, springing from moderate
