dispersion.' ^ That such feelings, <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

suspicions which ihey engendered, had struck deep<br />

into <strong>the</strong> popular mind, appears from <strong>the</strong> ftct, that<br />

even in <strong>the</strong> Apostolic Church, <strong>and</strong> that in her<br />

earliest days, disputes could break out between <strong>the</strong><br />

Hellenists <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Hebrews, arising from<br />

suspicion <strong>of</strong> unkind <strong>and</strong> unfair dealings grounded<br />

on <strong>the</strong>se sectional prejudices.^ * ^o^ ^ ><br />

Far o<strong>the</strong>r was <strong>the</strong> estimate in which <strong>the</strong><br />

Babvlonians were held by <strong>the</strong> leaders <strong>of</strong> Judaism.<br />

Indeed, according to one view <strong>of</strong> it. Babylonia, as<br />

well as ' Syria' as &r north as Antioch, was<br />

regarded as forming part <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> l<strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> Israel.*<br />
