Babbinism attached to <strong>the</strong> forgiveness <strong>of</strong> sins.<br />

Similarly, it is scarcely necessary to discuss <strong>the</strong><br />

Jewish views concerning fasting. In regard to<br />

verses 25 <strong>and</strong> 84, we may remark this exact<br />

parallel: ^ ^ Every one who has a loaf in his<br />

basket, <strong>and</strong> says, ^insot What shall I eat to-morrow<br />

? is one <strong>of</strong> little faith.' But Christianity *^* goes<br />

fur<strong>the</strong>r than this. While <strong>the</strong> Rabbinic saying only<br />

forbids care when <strong>the</strong>re is bread in <strong>the</strong> basket, our<br />

Lord would banish anxious care .even if <strong>the</strong>re<br />

were no bread in <strong>the</strong> basket. <strong>The</strong> expression in<br />

verse 34 seems to be a Babbinic proverb. Thus,®<br />

we read: * Care not for <strong>the</strong> mor^ • sniIl loq row,<br />

for ye know not what a day may bring forth.<br />

Perhaps he may not be on <strong>the</strong> monow, <strong>and</strong> so have<br />

cared for a world thatdoes notezist for him.' Only<br />

herei alflo, we mark that Ohrist significantly says<br />

not aa <strong>the</strong> Babbis, but, ' <strong>the</strong> morrow shall take<br />

thought for <strong>the</strong> things <strong>of</strong> itself.'<br />

In chapter vii., verse 2, <strong>the</strong> saying about having it
