<strong>the</strong> credibility <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Gospel-accounts <strong>of</strong> it, than<br />

can quotations from hea<strong>the</strong>n or from post-<br />

Apostolic Christian ^Titers. In truth, it must be<br />

decided purely on New Testament grounds; <strong>and</strong><br />

resolves itself into that <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> general<br />

trustworthiness <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Evangelic narratives, <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

our estimate <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Person <strong>of</strong> Christ. Thus viewed,<br />

he who regards <strong>Jesus</strong> as <strong>the</strong> <strong>Messiah</strong> <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> Son<br />

<strong>of</strong> God can be in no doubt. K we are asked to<br />

explain <strong>the</strong> rationale <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> phenomenon, or <strong>of</strong> its<br />

cessation—if, indeed, it has wholly <strong>and</strong><br />

everywhere ceased—^we might simply decline to<br />

attempt that for which we have not sufficient d^a,<br />
