lines <strong>of</strong> houses, each with its Qat ro<strong>of</strong> st<strong>and</strong>ing out<br />

distinctly against <strong>the</strong> clear sky; watered, terraced<br />

gardens, gnarled wide-spreading fig-trees,<br />

graceful fea<strong>the</strong>ry palms, scented oranges, silvery<br />

olive-trees, thick hedges, rich pasture-l<strong>and</strong>, <strong>the</strong>n<br />

<strong>the</strong> bounding hills to <strong>the</strong> south;<br />
