<strong>the</strong> footstepe <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Master. <strong>The</strong>y are only traced<br />

by <strong>the</strong> disciple who best understood <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

direction, <strong>and</strong> who alone has left us a record <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

beginning <strong>of</strong> Christ's ministry. For St. Mat<strong>the</strong>w <strong>and</strong><br />

St. Mark expressly indicate •St. icark i. <strong>the</strong><br />

imprisonment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Baptist as <strong>the</strong>ir starting-point,^<br />

<strong>and</strong>, though ir.*is St. Luke does not say this in so<br />

many words, he characteristically com-<br />

mences with Christ's pubUc Evangelic teaching in<br />

<strong>the</strong> Synagogues <strong>of</strong> •i^ysfiSltt Cralilee. Yet <strong>the</strong><br />

narrative <strong>of</strong> St. Mat<strong>the</strong>w ** reads ra<strong>the</strong>r like a<br />

brirf It. 13 to end summary ; * that <strong>of</strong> St. Mark<br />

seems like a succession <strong>of</strong> rapid sketches; <strong>and</strong><br />

even that <strong>of</strong> St. Luke, though with deeper historic<br />

purpose than <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>rs, outlines, ra<strong>the</strong>r than tells,<br />

<strong>the</strong> history. St. John alone does not pr<strong>of</strong>ess to give<br />

a narrative at all in <strong>the</strong> ordinary sense; but he<br />

selects incidents which are characteristic as
