Only in the hour of supreme need, when hip only child lay dying, did he resort to Jesus. There was need to perfect such faith, on the one side into perseverance of assxirance, and on the other into energy of trustfulness. The one was accomplished through the delay caused by the application of the woman, the other by the supervention of death during this interval. There was nothing unnatural or un-Jewish in the application of this Ruler to Jesus. He must have known of the healing of the son of the Courtofficial, and of the servant of the Centurion, there or in the immediate neighbourhood—as it was said, by the mere word of Christ. For there had been no imposition of dlence in regard to them, even had such been possible. Yet in both cases the recovery might be ascribed by some to
