And now <strong>the</strong> breeze from <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Lake, <strong>of</strong> which <strong>the</strong>y may have been unaware when<br />

<strong>the</strong>y embarked on <strong>the</strong> eastern shore, had freshened<br />

into violent, contrary wind. All energies must have<br />

been engaged to keep <strong>the</strong> boat's he^ towards <strong>the</strong><br />

shore.* Even so it seemed as if <strong>the</strong>y could make no<br />

pft^gress, when all at once, in <strong>the</strong> track that lay<br />

behind <strong>the</strong>m, a Pigure^pp^ared-As It passed<br />

onwards over <strong>the</strong> water, seemingly *'upborn^ by<br />

<strong>the</strong> waves as <strong>the</strong>y rose, not disappearing as <strong>the</strong>y<br />

fell, but carrie^ on as <strong>the</strong>y rolled, <strong>the</strong> silvery moon<br />

laid upon <strong>the</strong> trembling wat^fes <strong>the</strong> shadows <strong>of</strong> that<br />

Form as It moved, long <strong>and</strong> dark, on <strong>the</strong>ir f!krack.<br />

St. John uses an expression,^ which shows us, in<br />

<strong>the</strong> pale light,<br />

* According to St. Matt. xiv. 24, <strong>the</strong>y seem only to<br />

have encountered <strong>the</strong> full force <strong>of</strong> itie wind when<br />

<strong>the</strong>y were about <strong>the</strong> middle <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lake. We<br />

imagine that soon after <strong>the</strong>y embarked, <strong>the</strong>re may<br />

have been a fresh breeze from <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Lake, which by <strong>and</strong> by rose into a violent contrary<br />

wind.
