that, if known, CHAP, <strong>the</strong>y would not wholly<br />

vindicate <strong>the</strong> facts <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> case. At any rate, XIV it<br />

does not follow that <strong>the</strong>re are no such data because<br />

we do not ' ^ possess <strong>the</strong>m; nor is <strong>the</strong>re any ground<br />

for <strong>the</strong> contention that, if <strong>the</strong>y existed, we ought to<br />

possess <strong>the</strong>m. For, admittedly, <strong>the</strong> phenomenon<br />

was only a temporary one.<br />

And yet certain considerations will occur to <strong>the</strong><br />

thoughtful reader, which, if <strong>the</strong>y do not explain,<br />

will at least make him hesitate to designate as<br />

inexplicable, <strong>the</strong> facts in question. In our view, at<br />

least, he would be a bold interpreter who would<br />

ascribe all <strong>the</strong> phenomena even <strong>of</strong> hea<strong>the</strong>n magic<br />

to jugglery, or else to purely physical causes.<br />

Admittedly <strong>the</strong>y have ceased, or perhaps, as much<br />

else, assumed o<strong>the</strong>r forms, just as, so far as
