Saviour. Yet <strong>the</strong>re are two expressions, which<br />

convey <strong>the</strong> idea, if not <strong>of</strong> superhuman origin, yet <strong>of</strong><br />

some great mystery attaching to His birth. <strong>The</strong> first<br />

occurs in connection with <strong>the</strong> birth <strong>of</strong> Seth. ' Babbi<br />

Tanchuma said, in <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> Babbi Samuel: Eve<br />

had respect [had regard, looked forward] to that<br />

Seed which is to come from ano<strong>the</strong>r place. And<br />

who is tlds ? This is <strong>Messiah</strong> <strong>the</strong> King.' ^ <strong>The</strong><br />

second appears in <strong>the</strong> narrative <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> crime <strong>of</strong><br />

Lot's daughters : ^ ' It is not written, ^' that we may<br />

preserve a son from our fa<strong>the</strong>r," but '^ seed from<br />

our &<strong>the</strong>r.'' This is that seed which is coming from<br />

ano<strong>the</strong>r place. And who is this ? This is <strong>the</strong> King<br />

<strong>Messiah</strong>.' * *<br />

That a superhuman character attached, if not to <strong>the</strong><br />

Personality, yet to <strong>the</strong> Mission <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Messiah</strong>,<br />

appears from three passages, in which <strong>the</strong><br />

expression, ' <strong>The</strong> Spirit <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Lord moved upon<br />

<strong>the</strong> face <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> deep,' is thus paraphrased: ' This is<br />

<strong>the</strong> Spirit <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> King <strong>Messiah</strong>.''^ Whe<strong>the</strong>r this<br />

implies some activity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Messiah</strong> in connection<br />

with creation,' or only that, from <strong>the</strong> first. His
