snbject—he is' to hear himself' before <strong>the</strong> people<br />

hear him. But whatever else he may be or do, lie<br />

must be attractive.^ In earlier times <strong>the</strong> sermon<br />

might have consisted <strong>of</strong> a simple exposition <strong>of</strong><br />

some passages firom Scripture, or <strong>the</strong> Book <strong>of</strong><br />

Sirach, which latter was treated <strong>and</strong> quoted by<br />

some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Rabbis almost as if it had been •oomp.<br />

canonical.* But this, or <strong>the</strong> full discussion <strong>of</strong> a<br />

single text' (rnpj to qSSma, bore), would probably<br />

not be so attractive as <strong>the</strong> adaptation <strong>of</strong> a text<br />

lo^T<strong>of</strong>^1 to present circumstances, or even its<br />

modification <strong>and</strong> alteration for such purposes.<br />

<strong>The</strong>re were scarcely bounds to <strong>the</strong> liberties taken<br />

by <strong>the</strong> preacher. He would divide a sentence, cut<br />

<strong>of</strong>f one or two syllaUes from a word <strong>and</strong> join <strong>the</strong>m
