aeems to have been to settle in Bethlehem, where<br />

he had lived since <strong>the</strong> birth <strong>of</strong> <strong>Jesus</strong>. Obvious<br />

reasons would incline him to choose this, <strong>and</strong>, if<br />

pos^ble, to avoid Nazareth as <strong>the</strong> place <strong>of</strong> his<br />

residence. His trade, even had he been unknown in<br />

Bethlehem, would have easily supplied tha modest<br />

wants <strong>of</strong> his household. But when, on reaching<br />

Palestine, he learned who <strong>the</strong> successor <strong>of</strong> Herod<br />

was, <strong>and</strong> also, no doubt, in what manner he had<br />

inaugurafced his reign, common prudence would<br />

have dictated <strong>the</strong> withdrawal <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Infant-Saviour<br />

from <strong>the</strong> dominions <strong>of</strong> Archelaus. But it needed<br />

Divine direction to determine his setum to<br />

Kazareth.'<br />

Of <strong>the</strong> many years spent in Nazareth, during which<br />

<strong>Jesus</strong> passed horn infimcy to childhood, from<br />

childhood to youth, <strong>and</strong> from youth to manhood, <strong>the</strong><br />

Evangelic narrative has left us but briefest notice.<br />
