add that, in <strong>the</strong> discussion, <strong>the</strong> Saddncees seem<br />

only to have actually denied that <strong>the</strong>re was pro<strong>of</strong><br />

for this doctrine in <strong>the</strong> Pentateuch, <strong>and</strong> that <strong>the</strong>y<br />

ultimately pr<strong>of</strong>essed <strong>the</strong>mselves convinced by <strong>the</strong><br />

reasoning <strong>of</strong> Gamaliel.^ Still <strong>the</strong> concurrent<br />

testimony <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> New Testament <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong> Josephus<br />

leaves no doubt, that in this instance <strong>the</strong>ir views<br />

had not been misrepresented. Whe<strong>the</strong>r or not <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

opposition to <strong>the</strong> doctrine <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Besurrection<br />

arose in <strong>the</strong> first instance from, or was prompted<br />

by, Rationalistic views, which <strong>the</strong>y endeavoured<br />

to support by an appeal to <strong>the</strong> letter <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Pentateuch, as <strong>the</strong> source <strong>of</strong> traditionalism, it<br />

deserves notice that in His controversy with <strong>the</strong><br />

Saddncees Christ appealed to <strong>the</strong> Pentateuch in<br />

pro<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> His teaching.^<br />

Connected with this was <strong>the</strong> equally Rationalistic<br />

opposition to belief in Angels <strong>and</strong> Spirits. It is<br />

only mentioned in <strong>the</strong> New Testament,^ but seems<br />

almost to foUow as a corollary. Remembering
