are asked to believe, that after such a journey <strong>the</strong><br />

courtier had immediately set out on his retnnL. But<br />

this is absolutely necessary for <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>ory, since a<br />

Jew would not have set out on such a journey after<br />

dusk. But far<strong>the</strong>r, on <strong>the</strong> above supposition, <strong>the</strong><br />

servants <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> court-<strong>of</strong>ficial must have taken tiie<br />

road immediately, or very soon after, <strong>the</strong><br />

improvement eovnmenced. This is itself unlikely,<br />

<strong>and</strong>, indeed, counter-indicated by <strong>the</strong> terms <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

conversation between <strong>the</strong> courtier <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> servants,<br />

which imply that <strong>the</strong>y, had waited till <strong>the</strong>y were<br />

sure that it was reoovery, <strong>and</strong> not merely<br />

ft, a a temporary improvement.® Again, on <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong>ory combated, <strong>the</strong> servants, meeting <strong>the</strong> *<br />

courtier,' as we must suppose, midway, if not near<br />

to Capernaum, would have said, * Yesterday at <strong>the</strong><br />

seventh hour <strong>the</strong> fever left him,' meaning <strong>the</strong>reby,
