Babylon (afterwards also ' onr') Talmad. We do<br />

not possess ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se works complete.^ <strong>The</strong><br />

most defective is <strong>the</strong> Jerusalem Talmud, which is<br />

also much briefer, <strong>and</strong> contains far fewer<br />

discussions than that <strong>of</strong> Babylon. <strong>The</strong> Babylon<br />

Talmud, which in its present form extends over<br />

thirtynsix out <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sixty-three tractates <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Mishnah, is about ten or eleven times <strong>the</strong> size <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> latter, <strong>and</strong> more than four times that <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Jerusalem Talmud. It occupies (in our editions),<br />

with marginal commentations, 2,947 folio leaves<br />

(pages a <strong>and</strong> b). Both Talmuds are written in<br />

AramaBan; <strong>the</strong> one in its western, <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r in its<br />

eastern dialect, <strong>and</strong> in both <strong>the</strong> Mishnah is<br />

discussed seriatim, <strong>and</strong> clause by clause. Of <strong>the</strong><br />

character <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>se discussions it would be<br />

impossible to convey an adequate idea. When we
