It has already been stated, that Rabbinism<br />

confessed itself powerless in presence <strong>of</strong> this<br />

living death. Although, as MichaeUs rightly<br />

suggests,^ <strong>the</strong> sacrificial ritual for <strong>the</strong> cleansed<br />

leper implies, at least, <strong>the</strong> possibility <strong>of</strong> a cure, it<br />

is in every instance traced to <strong>the</strong> direct agency <strong>of</strong><br />

God.^ Hence <strong>the</strong> mythical <strong>the</strong>ory, which, to be<br />

rational, must show some precedent to account for<br />

<strong>the</strong> origination <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> narrative in <strong>the</strong> Gospel, here<br />

once more breaks down.® Keitn cannot deny <strong>the</strong><br />

evident au<strong>the</strong>nticity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Evangelic narrative, <strong>and</strong><br />

has no better explanation to <strong>of</strong>ier than that <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>
