dominions. But <strong>the</strong> old tyrant had changed his<br />

testament, <strong>and</strong> ^"^ ' ' Philip was left with great<br />

wealth, but as a private person living in Jerusalem.<br />

This little suited <strong>the</strong> woman's ambition. It was<br />

when his half-bro<strong>the</strong>r, Herod Antipas, came on a<br />

visit to him at Jerusalem, that an intrigue began<br />

between <strong>the</strong> Tetrarch <strong>and</strong> his bro<strong>the</strong>r's wife. It was<br />

agreed that, after <strong>the</strong> return <strong>of</strong> Antipas from his<br />

impending journey to Bome, he would repudiate<br />

his wife, <strong>the</strong> daughter <strong>of</strong> Aretas, king <strong>of</strong> Arabia,<br />

<strong>and</strong> wed Herodias. But Aretas' daughter heard <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> plot, <strong>and</strong> having obtained her husb<strong>and</strong>'s consent<br />

to go to MachsBrus, she fled <strong>the</strong>nce to her fa<strong>the</strong>r.<br />

This, <strong>of</strong> course, led to enmity between Antipas <strong>and</strong><br />

Aretas. Never<strong>the</strong>less, <strong>the</strong> adulterous marriage with<br />

Herodias followed. In a few sentences <strong>the</strong> story<br />

may be carried to its termination. <strong>The</strong> woman<br />

proved <strong>the</strong> curse <strong>and</strong> ruin <strong>of</strong> Antipas. First came<br />

<strong>the</strong> murder <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Baptist, which sent a thrill <strong>of</strong><br />

horror through <strong>the</strong> people, <strong>and</strong> to which all <strong>the</strong>
