in language such as might have been expected.<br />

Here also it must be remembered, that both <strong>the</strong> act<br />

<strong>of</strong> homage, or ' worship,' <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> words spoken,<br />

were not <strong>the</strong> outcome ei<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> demonised only,<br />

nor yet <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> demons only, but a combination <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> two: <strong>the</strong> control <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> demons being absolute<br />

over <strong>the</strong> man such as he was. <strong>The</strong>ir language led to<br />

his worship; iJieir feelings <strong>and</strong> fears appeared in<br />

his language. It was <strong>the</strong> self-confession <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

demons^ when obliged to come into His Presence<br />

<strong>and</strong> do homage, which made <strong>the</strong> man fall down<br />

<strong>and</strong>, in <strong>the</strong> well-known Jewish formula, recorded<br />

by <strong>the</strong> three Evangelists, say : * What have I to do<br />

with <strong>The</strong>e,' or ra<strong>the</strong>r, ' What between me <strong>and</strong><br />

<strong>The</strong>e'—what have we in common (Mah li valakh)<br />

? Similarly, although it was consciousness <strong>of</strong><br />

subjection <strong>and</strong> fear in His Presence, on <strong>the</strong> part <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> demons, which underlay <strong>the</strong> adjuration not to<br />

inflict torment on <strong>the</strong>m, yet <strong>the</strong> language itself, as<br />

<strong>the</strong> text shows, was that <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>
