what meaning would all this convey to <strong>the</strong> Jewish<br />

hearers <strong>of</strong> <strong>Jesus</strong> ? How could this sowing <strong>and</strong><br />

growing be like <strong>the</strong> Kingdom <strong>of</strong> God ? Certainly<br />

not in <strong>the</strong> sense in which <strong>the</strong>y expected it. To <strong>the</strong>m<br />

it was only a rich harvest, when all Israel would<br />

bear plenteous fruit. Again, what was <strong>the</strong> Seed,<br />

<strong>and</strong> who <strong>the</strong> Sower? or what could be meant by <strong>the</strong><br />

various kinds <strong>of</strong> soil <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir unproductiveness ?<br />

To us, as explained by <strong>the</strong> Lord, all this seems<br />

plain. But to <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong>re could be no possibility <strong>of</strong><br />

underst<strong>and</strong>ing, but much occasion for
