restored to life, how much more shall He, Who is<br />

<strong>Life</strong>, restore <strong>the</strong> dead to life.' And here lies <strong>the</strong> trae<br />

interpretation <strong>of</strong> what <strong>Jesus</strong> taught. K <strong>the</strong> uplifted<br />

serpent, as symbol, brought life to <strong>the</strong> believing<br />

look which was fixed upon <strong>the</strong> giving, pardoning<br />

love <strong>of</strong> Grod, <strong>the</strong>n, in <strong>the</strong> truest sense, shall <strong>the</strong><br />

uplifted Son <strong>of</strong> Man give true life to everyone that<br />

believeth, looking up in Him to <strong>the</strong> giving <strong>and</strong><br />

forgiving love <strong>of</strong> God, which His Son came to<br />

bring, to declare, <strong>and</strong> to manifest. 'For as Moses<br />

lifted up <strong>the</strong> serpent in <strong>the</strong> wilderness, so must <strong>the</strong><br />

Son <strong>of</strong> Man be lifted up, that whosoever believeth<br />

should in Him have eternal life/ '<br />

With this final <strong>and</strong> highest teaching, which contains<br />

all that Nicodemus, or, indeed, <strong>the</strong> whole Church,<br />

could require or be able to know, He explained to<br />

him <strong>and</strong> to us <strong>the</strong> how <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> new birth—alike <strong>the</strong><br />

source <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> flow <strong>of</strong> its spring. Ours it is now<br />

only to ' believe,' where we cannot fur<strong>the</strong>r know,<br />

<strong>and</strong>, looking up to <strong>the</strong> Son o£ Man in His perfected<br />

work, to perceive, <strong>and</strong> to receive <strong>the</strong> gift <strong>of</strong> Gk)d's
