confusion, <strong>of</strong> which <strong>the</strong>re is much in connection<br />

with <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> Nicodemus in <strong>the</strong> Talmud.<br />

According to <strong>the</strong> Talmud, like Mat<strong>the</strong>w, <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r<br />

three tried to save <strong>the</strong>ir lives by punning appeals to<br />

Scrip-ture, similar to that <strong>of</strong> St. Mat<strong>the</strong>w. Thus,<br />

Neqai quotes Exod. xxiii. 7, ' Naql (' <strong>the</strong> innocent'<br />

in our version) <strong>and</strong> <strong>the</strong> righteous shalt thou not<br />

slay,* to which th« judges replied by Ps. x. 8, * in<br />

<strong>the</strong><br />

secret places he shall slay Naql (*tbe innocent * in<br />

our version).' Again, Netser pleads Is. xi. I: *<br />

Netser (a branch) stuJl grow out <strong>of</strong> his roots,' to<br />

whidi <strong>the</strong> judges reply. Is. xiv. 19: *Thoa art cast<br />

out <strong>of</strong> thy grave like an abominable Netser'<br />

(branch), while Boni tries to save his life by a pun<br />

on Bxod. iv. 2S: 'My first-bom BetU (in our<br />

version,«my son ^ is Israel,' to which <strong>the</strong> judges<br />

reply by quoting <strong>the</strong> next verse, ' I will day Binkha<br />

(in our version,' thy son'), thy first-bom 1' If <strong>the</strong><br />

Hebrew Bimi was sometimes pronounced Botii,<br />

this may account for <strong>the</strong> Gredanised form Boamr-
