shared); Malthake, a Samaritan, was <strong>the</strong> mo<strong>the</strong>r <strong>of</strong><br />

Archelaus <strong>and</strong> Herod Antipas; <strong>and</strong>, lastly,<br />

Cleopatra <strong>of</strong> Jerusalem bore Philip. <strong>The</strong> sons <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> Maccabean princess, as heirs presumptive,<br />

were sent to Rome for <strong>the</strong>ir education. On this<br />

occasion Herod received, as reward for many<br />

services, <strong>the</strong> country east <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Jordan, <strong>and</strong> was<br />

allowed to appoint his still remaining bro<strong>the</strong>r,<br />

Pheroras, Tetrarch <strong>of</strong> Persea. On <strong>the</strong>ir return from<br />

Rome <strong>the</strong> young princes were married: Alex<strong>and</strong>er<br />

to a daughter <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> King <strong>of</strong> Cappadocia, <strong>and</strong><br />

Aristobulus to his cousin Berenice, <strong>the</strong> daughter <strong>of</strong><br />

Salome. But nei<strong>the</strong>r kinship, nor <strong>the</strong> yet nearer<br />

relation in which Aristobulus now stood to her,<br />

could extinguish <strong>the</strong> hatred <strong>of</strong> Salome towards <strong>the</strong><br />

dead Maccabean princess or her children. Nor did<br />

<strong>the</strong> young princes, in <strong>the</strong>ir pride <strong>of</strong> descent,<br />

disguise <strong>the</strong>ir feelings towards <strong>the</strong> house <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

fa<strong>the</strong>r. At first, Herod gave not heed to <strong>the</strong><br />

denunciations <strong>of</strong> his sister. Presently he yielded to<br />
