this plan is the result <strong>of</strong> free grace ; that it is unsurpassable in breadth <strong>and</strong><br />

length, <strong>and</strong> height <strong>and</strong> depth, being the exhibition <strong>of</strong> a love <strong>of</strong> which the<br />

wealth is inexhaustible <strong>and</strong> passes knowledge ; that the benefits <strong>of</strong> it extend<br />

alike to Jew <strong>and</strong> Gentile ; that it centres in the person <strong>of</strong> the risen Christ ;<br />

<strong>and</strong> that to the Apostle himself, unworthy as he is, is entrusted the awful<br />

responsibility <strong>of</strong> preaching it among the Gentiles.<br />

<strong>The</strong> incessant recurrence <strong>of</strong> leading words connected with these different<br />

thoughts is a remarkable feature <strong>of</strong> the first three chapters. 1<br />
