Closely related to H. tniniala but elytra with a definite fascia,<br />

followed by a nearly immaculate area; fourth antenna! segment<br />

roseate at base, fifth segment abruptly shorter, third and fourth<br />

segments more robust ; and horns on antennal tubercles of male<br />

nearly vertical, straight, not curved inwards.<br />

MALE. Elongate-ovate, rather robust, subcylindrical, above subdepressed;<br />

piceous or black, ra.ther densely covered with short, brown pubescence, maculate<br />

with white and bright rosy or orange-ochraceous, in a mallller that varies very<br />

greatly in different individuals. Head with nine orange (or rosy) vittae : OllO<br />

medilln and one each side above eye, straight, converging towards front, one run­<br />

ning to isthmus of each eye, one broader below eye and a very broad one towards<br />

mouth, all these oblique; front tinged here and there with rosy or orange. Pro­<br />

notum with seven orange or rosy vittae: median one fmc, on apical half, one each<br />

side of middle oblique (at least apically), a. subequal one each side above lateral<br />

tubercles, alld a very broad one on sides, oblique. Scutellum with basal angles gray.<br />

Elytr:l. very variable, at extreme base each with three to five shor, orange vittae,<br />

thence variegated with white and orange or rosy, at middle the latter becoming<br />

vittiform and tenninating abruptly behind middle and forming a more or less dis­<br />

t.inct narrow fascia of white and orangish, this is nnrrow, sometimes interrupted,<br />

strongly undulating, extending from apical third of sides obliquely forwards to<br />

middle, not attaining suture, followed behind by a broad band of brown, similar<br />

in shapc, which is nearly free of pale marks, not attaining suture, thence to apex<br />

vittnte and variegated with orange or rosy, and white; sometimes a large portion of<br />

the disk before the fascia is nearly (or quite) free of maculation. Body beneath<br />

piceous or black, covered with pale rosy-gray pubescence and more or less strongly<br />

variegated with bright rosy, sides of metasternum brown; abdomen with four or<br />

six rows of rosy maculae, one row marginal, one betwcen this and middle, and one<br />

each side of middle. Legs and antennae black, densely brown pubescent, variegated<br />

with hoary; SC.'IPC and bases of third and fourth segments of antennae rosy, other<br />

segments annulate with gray at base; femora biannulate with rosy apicaJly, pro­<br />

femora nearly entirely this color; tarsal claw segments entirely brown pubescent.<br />

Head minutely nlutaceous, medinn impressed line from occiput to clypcus ;<br />

front subquadrate, widened slightly above, broadly concave and impressed between<br />

antennal tubercles, finely punctate; genae vertical, minutely alut·accous; eye with<br />

lower lobe oblong, about equal in height to gena; antennal tubercles prominent, well<br />

separated, robust, ending internally with an upright, short, robust horn, which is<br />

usually curved slightly outwards, although in one individual it curves inwards<br />

slightly. Pronotum strongly transverse, marc than twice as wide as long; sides ir­<br />

regular, narrowed anteriorly, lateral tubercles broad, ending in an obtuse, robust,<br />

conical spine; anterior and posterior transverse sulci rather shallow, deeper medi­<br />

ally at each side, the basal one coalescing with the lateral oblique sulci ; disk at<br />

middle with a. triangular tubercle, each side strongly tumid, each tumescence nearly<br />

transvorsely impressed, basally with a few scattered punctures. Scutellum trans-
