PREFACE
'l'he tribe Onciderini has been a much neglected group of the
Cerambycidae. There has never been a complete revision of the
tribe as a who1e : Buquet in 1852 revised the genus Trachysmn1J.s
and in 1854 the genus T,'cstoniaj Thomson designated genotypes
and partially revised the species of O,tcideres (1864) j and Lacordaire
(1872) reewed the genera of the tribe. But since then
only scattered descriptions of new species and genera have appeared.
Whether this neglect is due to the scarcity of material or
the inconsistency of IUany structural characters used reliably in
other groups, still remains to be seen.
As a whole, this tribe appears to be among the larger ones of
this family, having as it does, sixty-three genera which include
some two hundred sixty species that have come to light in this
study. But the scarcity of material, the number of species and
even of genera of one collection which are not duplicated in any
other collection, and the number of monotypic genera probably
indicate that tbe tribe really is much larger than is apparent by
the number of s'pecies which have actually been studied.
Material for tl1is study has come from the following institutions
and persons : Carnegie Museum [0. M.] ; Museum of Comparative
Zoology [M.C.Z.] ; Cornell University [Oorn. D.] j University
of Minnesota [Minn. U.] ; Academy of Natural Sciences at Philadelphia
[A.N.S.P.); U. S. National Museum [U.S.N.M.); Uni.
versity of Michigan [Micb. D.] ; .American Museum of Natural
History [A.M.N.H.] i California Academy of Sciences [C.A.S.] ;
Ward's Scientific Establishment, Inc. [W.S.E.] j Ohio State
of Lionel Lacey.
Thanks are due to the curators of these collections for their
Special tbanks are extended to Warren L. Fisher of the D. S.
National Museum who has helped in many ways j to Lionel Lacev
