these girls whose free manner of walk<strong>in</strong>g, rouged lips, and foreign-style cloth<strong>in</strong>g<br />

imitated the <strong>in</strong>accessible, deified foreign women liv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the new city.<br />

The two young women walked <strong>in</strong> this quarter where the pestilential odor<br />

of fish caught <strong>in</strong> their throats wherever they went, where the trash cans spilled<br />

their <strong>in</strong>test<strong>in</strong>es onto the sidewalks and even <strong>in</strong>to the street, where bearded rabbis<br />

houses. They passed through a dark entryway and emerged <strong>in</strong>to a small patio<br />

similar to those of modest traditional Muslim homes. They saw a Jewish woman<br />

of <strong>in</strong>determ<strong>in</strong>ate age sew<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a corner of the patio. She was dressed like a<br />

gypsy, wear<strong>in</strong>g a long skirt and a colorful blouse. Her str<strong>in</strong>gy, bleached hair fell<br />

to her shoulders. Next to her a child cried <strong>in</strong> a wooden cradle even though the<br />

woman was rock<strong>in</strong>g it with the tips of her bare toes.<br />

A girl wear<strong>in</strong>g a large apron was wash<strong>in</strong>g dishes at a wall founta<strong>in</strong>. She<br />

didn't even turn around when she heard the voices of strangers.<br />
