perception regard<strong>in</strong>g audience composition and <strong>in</strong>fluence <strong>in</strong> this small group of<br />

translators who had worked with narratives by Arab women. The responses<br />

<strong>in</strong>dicate that though their approaches to translation vary <strong>in</strong> many respects, they<br />

co<strong>in</strong>cide on several issues. Whether or not the translators "imag<strong>in</strong>ed an audience,"<br />

they all aimed to meet various sets of criteria correspond<strong>in</strong>g to anticipated reader<br />

expectations.<br />

These translators approached their job from various positions and<br />

backgrounds and with dissimilar priorities and perceptions. Denys Johnson-<br />

Davies occupied the position of translation <strong>in</strong>itiator, publish<strong>in</strong>g editor and<br />

translator for Distant View of a M<strong>in</strong>aret. Marilyn Booth collaborated closely with<br />

the publish<strong>in</strong>g editor who <strong>in</strong>itiated the Grandmother's Cactus project and could<br />

choose which stories to translate for the collection. Marjolijn de Jager, Cather<strong>in</strong>e<br />

Cobham, and Barbara Parmenter were commissioned to translate their respective<br />

pieces, but <strong>in</strong> practice, the separation of duties between the author, the translator<br />

and the editor is often less dist<strong>in</strong>ct and more permeable than their role titles<br />

suggest.<br />

Their responses <strong>in</strong>dicated various hierarchies of values and objectives.<br />

Denys Johnson-Davies, Marjolijn de Jager, Cather<strong>in</strong>e Cobham and Marilyn Booth<br />

noted the importance of attention to recreat<strong>in</strong>g the emotive and aesthetic effects of<br />

the orig<strong>in</strong>al. Marjolijn de Jager hopes to share her enthusiasm for the work she is<br />

translat<strong>in</strong>g and to pique readers' <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>in</strong> read<strong>in</strong>g similar works. She tries "to<br />

<strong>in</strong>habit characters, feel the music, understand events, and then put [the text] <strong>in</strong>to<br />

the new language relat<strong>in</strong>g it <strong>in</strong> atmosphere and feel<strong>in</strong>g as closely as [she] can."<br />

Cather<strong>in</strong>e Cobham aims to convey "the feel<strong>in</strong>g and atmosphere of <strong>in</strong>dividual<br />
