To f<strong>in</strong>d out more about how these translators perceived their imag<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

audiences while translat<strong>in</strong>g works similar to <strong>La</strong> <strong>Baroudeuse</strong>, I generated a<br />

questionnaire of the n<strong>in</strong>e follow<strong>in</strong>g questions.<br />

1) When you translated [the title of one or more translations], did you have<br />

an audience <strong>in</strong> m<strong>in</strong>d?<br />

2) If so, what <strong>in</strong>dividuals might you list as belong<strong>in</strong>g to this audience?<br />

(yourself? the author? your publisher? a professor you had? classmates <strong>in</strong><br />

one of your courses? professional readers? non-professional readers?)<br />

3) How strong was your awareness of this audience?<br />

4) Did you aim to accommodate or to challenge the expectations of your<br />

audience?<br />

5) How would you characterize your attitude toward the orig<strong>in</strong>al audience<br />

and cultural context?<br />

6) How would you characterize your attitude toward the audience and<br />

cultural context of the translation?<br />

7) How would you characterize the general tone and purpose of your<br />

translation?<br />

8) How would you characterize what you imag<strong>in</strong>ed would be your<br />

audience's attitude toward the text and the cultural context it conveys?<br />

9) Describe some of the decisions you made while translat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> which<br />

you felt the <strong>in</strong>fluence of, sought to impose your <strong>in</strong>fluence on, or otherwise<br />

anticipated the responses of your audience?<br />

These questions assume that every translator writes for an imag<strong>in</strong>ed audience and<br />

ask the respondents to clarify their perception of and <strong>in</strong>teraction with their<br />

audiences dur<strong>in</strong>g the translation of one or more specific narratives, the ones<br />

discussed earlier <strong>in</strong> this chapter. Each respondent was <strong>in</strong>vited to <strong>in</strong>terpret the<br />

questions liberally and encouraged to view the questions as spr<strong>in</strong>gboards for<br />

discussions and comments about the relationship between translator and audience.<br />

With these questions, I hoped to discover similarities and idiosyncrasies of<br />
