<strong>La</strong>wrence Venuti’s and André Lefevere’s paradigmatic structures<br />

<strong>in</strong>fluenced my analysis of orig<strong>in</strong>al texts and translation processes, though their<br />

concepts of and approaches to translation diverge. Venuti acknowledges<br />

Schleiermacher <strong>in</strong> dist<strong>in</strong>guish<strong>in</strong>g between the translator who chooses a<br />

"domesticat<strong>in</strong>g method, an ethnocentric reduction of the foreign text to target-<br />

language cultural values, br<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>g the author back home" and the translator who<br />

chooses a "foreigniz<strong>in</strong>g method, an ethnodeviant pressure on those values to<br />

register the l<strong>in</strong>guistic and cultural difference of the foreign text, send<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

reader abroad." 29 Foreigniz<strong>in</strong>g techniques <strong>in</strong>clude the use of transcribed foreign<br />

words, literal translations of proverbs and say<strong>in</strong>gs, and paratextual devices such as<br />

glossaries and notes. Venuti calls for translators to <strong>in</strong>sist on "foreigniz<strong>in</strong>g<br />

translation" to open "spaces for new ideas, concepts of alterity, and literary<br />

<strong>in</strong>novation." 30 He argues for translator visibility and aga<strong>in</strong>st textual fluency,<br />

advocat<strong>in</strong>g what he calls "resistant" translation, which makes the reader<br />

constantly aware of read<strong>in</strong>g a translation, a text shaped by the translator's choices.<br />

He encourages translators to refuse fluency to guide the reader to question the<br />

easy codes of the exotic ("Invisibility" 18). This approach presents translation as<br />

an act of political resistance aga<strong>in</strong>st cultural hegemony. Read<strong>in</strong>g Venuti has<br />

enhanced my awareness of potential l<strong>in</strong>guistic and cultural power differentials <strong>in</strong><br />

post-colonial translation and helped me more clearly discern my own approach to<br />
