Table 3.3.3-5. Special-status wildlife species that potentially occur within the project vicinity (Source: PCWA, 2011a;
2011b).
Species Name Status Habitat Occurrence Notes
Amphibians
Foothill yellow-legged
frog
(Rana boylii)
Mount Lyell
salamander
(Hydromantes
platycephalus)
FSS
CSC
Breeds in rocky streams with cool
clear water in a variety of habitats,
including valley and foothill oak
woodland, riparian forest,
ponderosa pine, mixed conifer,
coastal scrub, mixed chaparral,
and wet meadows; occurs from sea
level to 6,000 feet.
CSC High elevation rock outcrops
associated with free surface water
(permanent streams, waterfalls,
and seeps); breeds beneath granite
rocks or slabs covering most
granitic soil. Sierra to Tulare
Counties from 4,000 to 11,600
feet.
Most of the perennial streams and rivers in the vicinity
of the project below 4,500 feet provide suitable habitat
for one or more life stages of this species.
Surveys documented breeding in the lower portions of
the Rubicon River (below 3,350 feet) and Middle Fork
American River (below 1,800 feet) bypassed reaches,
four lower elevation tributaries to the peaking reach
(American Canyon Creek, Gas Canyon Creek, Todd
Creek, and Otter Creek), and comparison river
reaches.
A species-specific relicensing survey for Mount Lyell
salamander was not conducted. No incidental
observations of this species were documented during
the field surveys.
