Wie without antecedent<br />

Sometimes, the relative pronoun wie ref<strong>er</strong>s to a p<strong>er</strong>son (or p<strong>er</strong>sons) in<br />

gen<strong>er</strong>al, and th<strong>er</strong>e is no antecedent, similar to the English word ‘whoev<strong>er</strong>’.<br />

Examples:<br />

Wie klaar is met de test, mag hem hi<strong>er</strong> inlev<strong>er</strong>en.<br />

Whoev<strong>er</strong> is finished with the test, can hand it in h<strong>er</strong>e.<br />

Wie z’n gat v<strong>er</strong>brandt, moet op de blaren zitten.<br />

Whoev<strong>er</strong> burns his/h<strong>er</strong> butt, must sit on the blist<strong>er</strong>s (prov<strong>er</strong>b: you have<br />

to feel the consequences of your mistakes).<br />

Wie mooi wil gaan, moet pijn uitstaan.<br />

If you want to look pretty, it might hurt.<br />

Wat without antecedent<br />

Similar to wie without antecedent, the relative pronoun wat can ref<strong>er</strong><br />

to something that is not explicitly mentioned; the antecedent is implied.<br />

In English we would say ‘whatev<strong>er</strong>’. Examples:<br />

Wat je niet lust, kun je op je bord laten liggen.<br />

Whatev<strong>er</strong> you don’t like, you can leave on your plate.<br />

Wat hij zegt moet je niet geloven.<br />

You shouldn’t believe what he says.<br />

Wat ref<strong>er</strong>ring to a sentence<br />

The relative pronoun wat can ref<strong>er</strong> to a fact mentioned in the previous<br />

or in the following sentence. It can thus ref<strong>er</strong> to a complete sentence.<br />

Examples:<br />

Hij maakte een lunchpakketje voor me, wat ik hartstikke aardig vond.<br />

He made me a lunch bag, which I thought was really nice.<br />

Wat is niet begrijp, is hoe die auto van de weg kon raken.<br />

What I don’t und<strong>er</strong>stand is how that car could get off the road.<br />

Wat aft<strong>er</strong> an indefinite pronoun<br />

The relative pronoun wat follows indefinite pronouns such as iets, niets,<br />

alles, veel, weinig, genoeg. Examples:<br />
