Er was gisteren een feestje bij de buren. Er werd ontzettend harde muziek
gespeeld. De muren dreunden ervan. Er werd heel veel gedronken,
dat kon je wel merken. Er mocht binnen niet gerookt worden, maar
vanmorgen lagen er honderden peuken op de stoep.
There was a party at the neighbors’ yesterday. They played incredibly
loud music. The walls were thumping (from it, because of it). They drank
a lot, you could tell. Smoking inside was prohibited, but this morning
there were hundreds of butts on the front steps.
Next, an example of a report one might find in a newspaper:
In de nacht van woensdag op donderdag is er bij het filiaal van Albert
Heijn op de Hogeweg ingebroken. Er werd geen geld gestolen, omdat
de kassa’s op dat tijdstip leeg waren, maar er werd voor ongeveer 3.000
euro aan goederen ontvreemd. Ook werd er voor minstens 10.000 euro
aan schade veroorzaakt. Er zijn nog geen sporen gevonden die naar de
identiteit van de daders zouden kunnen leiden.
In the night between Wednesday and Thursday, the branch of Albert
Heijn on the Hogeweg was broken into. No money was stolen, because
the cash registers were empty at that time, but goods to the value of
about 3,000 euros were taken. The robbery also caused damage of at
least 10,000 euros. No traces have as yet been found that could lead to
the identity of the robbers.
The position of er in main and subordinated sentences
In its grammatical function, when used to introduce an indefinite subject
or as part of a passive sentence, er is usually at the beginning of the sentence,
unless the sentence begins with another element than the subject.
In that case er follows the finite verb.
Er ligt een krant op tafel. There’s a newspaper on the table.
Er wordt op school veel gelachen. There’s lots of laughter at school.
Vandaag is er een goede film op tv. Today, there’s a good movie on TV.
In a subordinated sentence, when used in its grammatical function, er
follows the conjunction. The previous examples are now used in a subordinated
clause:
Erik zegt dat er een krant op tafel ligt.
Peter gaat graag naar school omdat er veel gelachen wordt.
Karin, kijk jij eens even of er vandaag een goede film op tv is.
